Microadventures outside the conference room

You know how it is: you are attending a conference or an event - in a city that you might already know, but maybe not ...

Have you ever taken a closer look at where you actually are?

What opportunities open up to you right outside the conference door of the event you are attending?

Every (new) place we come to, even if it is in an otherwise familiar environment, has plenty of unexpected adventures in store for us. And especially after a long day filled with valuable input and exchange - but also with a lot of sitting still, it is worth remembering:

Humans are born to walk. Preferably every day. At least 10,000 steps.

Have you already done that today? No?

Let's go!

Your journey of discovery can begin immediately! Step outside the door after a day of meetings or congresses - take a deep breath - and start your journey of discovery. (You are also welcome to take a few nice people with you).

You need some ideas on how to do it? No problem at all. Here are a few:

  1. Run! Without a destination - and, if at all possible, exclusively straight ahead!

  2. Sit down in a busy square and watch the people. Don't read a book, don't listen to music, leave the smartphone in your pocket. Just sit. And look.

  3. Look for traces of your home (city) or favourite culture. Where are there suitable restaurants and cafés? Where do people from that culture meet? Where are films shown in the local language? Where do people play typical games? Where do people dance, celebrate and discuss in the way you know and love from this culture?

  4. Sit down on any S-Bahn, tram or bus line and ride to the final stop. Explore the surroundings!

  5. Follow your ears! Identify a noise and go in search of its source. When you have found it - listen again - find a new sound - and go in search of it again.

  6. Find the highest point in the city! Enjoy the view!

  7. Find the quietest place in the city centre. Retreat and relax while the world races past you.

  8. Ask people at the meeting - or just on the street - where their favourite place in the city is - visit these places.

  9. Maybe there are unusual guided tours on site, e.g. through the sewers, catacombs, secret passages or other underground worlds? Find out - and take a look at the world from below!

  10. Look for the numbers from 1 to 100 in every conceivable place. No matter whether it's a house number, a billboard, a number plate, a T-shirt print or a fire hydrant. Search in order. Start at 1.

  11. Where do the most unusual plants in the city grow? Find out!

  12. Do something you've always wanted to do but never get around to in your home town!
