Opening of the Heinz Steyer Stadium: A sporting highlight in Dresden

Dresden is delighted to announce the official opening of the new Heinz Steyer Stadium. The Opening weekend promises an impressive programme for sports enthusiasts and the people of Dresden.

29 August 2024: Stadium Run

The opening weekend begins on Thursday, 29 August 2024, with a 5 km Stadium Run. The run starts in the Rudolf Habig Stadium and ends in the brand new Heinz Steyer Stadium. Around 2,000 participants are expected to tackle the course at this event.

30 August 2024: Golden Oval (athletics meeting)

On Friday, 30 August 2024, the "Golden Oval" will follow. August 2024 will see the "Golden Oval", a top-class athletics meeting in which top German and international athletes from 25 nations will compete against each other.

Including seven Germans who took part in the Summer Olympics in Paris: Karl Bebendorf (3.000 m steeplechase), Velten Schneider (3000 m steeplechase), Rebekka Haase (100 m & bronze medallist of the 4 x 100 m sprint relay 2024 in Paris), Lisa Mayer (100 m & bronze medallist of the 4 x 100 m sprint relay 2024 in Paris) Sophia Junk (4 x 100 m relay), Julian Wagner (4 x 100 m relay), Max Heß (triple jump), Robert Farken (800 m).

The disciplines of the "Golden Oval":

  • 100 metres (men and women)

  • 400 metres (men, women)

  • 800 metres men

  • 3000 metres steeplechase men

  • 400 metres hurdles women

  • 5000 metres (men and women)

  • Javelin throw men

  • High jump Men

  • Triple jump (men and women)

  • Discus throw (men and women)

The official opening of the stadium will take place at 6pm in the presence of the Lord Mayor of the City of Dresden and the Minister President.

31 August 2024: Open Day

On 31 August 2024, the stadium will host an Open Day to give visitors an insight into all areas of the stadium. The stadium will open its doors to all interested parties from 12 noon to 6 pm. Admission is free of charge.

01 September 2024: Dresden Monarchs home game

The weekend will culminate on Sunday, 1 September 2024, with a thrilling home game between the Dresden Monarchs and the Allgäu Comets that will get American football fans' hearts racing.

"With the Heinz Steyer Stadium, we offer the best training and competition conditions for top-level, club and recreational sport. This means that Dresden can once again host major sporting events and national and international competitions at the highest level. The Heinz Steyer Stadium is something very special with its history, its modern multifunctionality and its fantastic location in the city. This sporting excitement and joy, almost like before the starting shot of a race or the kick-off of a match, can be felt by everyone involved. I'm really looking forward to the opening weekend. I wish the sporting preparations and the construction work continued success and invite the people of Dresden to make a note of the last weekend in August." - Lord Mayor Dirk Hilbert

Facts about the new "Heinz-Steyer-Stadion" sports centre

The new south stand with a length of approx. 140 metres long, offers numerous modern sports facilities on four floors:

  • a fencing hall with ten fencing lanes,

  • a squash area with five courts,

  • a 500 square metre strength and athletics area,

  • rooms for cycling, ballet, gymnastics and courses,

  • a multifunctional room for sports and educational purposes or as a VIP area

Other facilities include cabins, offices for sports clubs, a sports equipment shop and a medical-scientific centre for performance diagnostics and sports medicine, which will be expanded in 2025.

The stadium is equipped with a grass pitch and extensive athletics facilities, including nine tartan running tracks, long jump facilities and areas for high jump, javelin throw and shot put. Ten entrances, including one barrier-free entrance, lead into the stadium, which offers 10,400 seats, 5,400 of which are covered. Mobile grandstands allow the capacity to be expanded to up to 15,000 people.

The plaza in front of the south stand features recreation and activity areas. There are 552 bicycle and 366 car parking spaces available for visitors, including 28 for people with reduced mobility.
